Golden Medusa
Golden Medusa - AKP010
The Papuan jellyfish (Mastigias papua), nicknamed the Golden Medusa, photographed at night in a jellyfish lake in Raja Ampat.
I saw these jellyfish in a jellyfish lake whilst on recent dive trip in Raja Ampat. We visited the area in the late afternoon and due to a saltwater crocodile sighting in the area only days before, we weren’t able to swim in the water. The subject was stunning and I knew I wanted to try photograph the jellies in darkness. Later that night, I organised another mission to return to the location. No swimming allowed, I was able to get this shot by hanging my body over the side of the boat while the crew of the boat were spotting for any possible crocodile.
